Free Range Egg Producers

As we continue to win business in the market, we must build more long-term partnerships with free range and organic producers. Competitive prices and fast-track payment systems are on offer to producers situated in Central or Southern England.

A comprehensive support package is in place for our free range and organic suppliers, with advice on the production and technical aspects of running a successful site.

Help from our support team includes advice and guidance on the requirements of the BEIC Lion code, RSPCA Assured  (Freedom Foods) and Organic codes.

For those planning their first free range unit or expanding an existing holding, you could also take advantage of our knowledge and experience of planning applications, poultry house layout and breed selection.

Food safety & quality

Our food safety system is based around the principals of HACCP and strict hygiene standards, which are incorporated into our processes and monitored by a dedicated technical team.

The quality, security and safety of all of our products is assured by, and independently audited to, the internationally recognised BRC Food Standard.

With our on-site laboratory we are able to constantly assess our products performance, providing confidence that high standards are being delivered and identifying opportunities for future improvement. Quality of results is assured by the laboratory’s management system, which is accredited to ISO17025 and assessed by UKAS.

Quality systems across the business are managed, controlled and audited to ISO 9001:2000 standards. This helps us to achieve standards of quality that are recognised and respected throughout the world.

The future egg market

Egg consumption has been on the increase for the past 15 years with eggs now seen a healthy, nutritious food.

Demand for free range eggs has also gone from strength to strength. More eggs are now produced on free range farms than any other system, and the demand for free range eggs in retail continues to grow at 8%. Fridays plan to continue to invest in and grow the free range egg market.

2016 saw many supermarkets commit to sell only cage free eggs. In a parallel move, Fridays now intends to phase out all colony egg production and concentrate on free range and barn egg production. This move mirrors changing consumer demand and supermarket plans to sell only free range and barn eggs in the future.

Our intention is to achieve this to meet our customers’ stated target date of 2025. This will require substantial investment in new buildings and facilities and we intend to begin planning the changeover process now in order to meet the 2025 date.

Welfare systems

Lion Code
All of our eggs are produced under the Lion Code of Practice, which is focused on the safety of eggs, and welfare requirements.

Free Range and Barn Production
We are pleased to be working with the RSPCA, through their RSPCA Assured scheme, to ensure that our free range and barn systems meet their comprehensive welfare requirements.

Organic Production
Our Organic hens are fed on organically certified feed and range on organic land. Their eggs are produced to the widely recognised Organic Farmers and Growers code of practice.

Production Efficiences

All sites (including 6 production sites) are situated within 20 minutes of our Head Office.

This results in a uniquely high level of vertical integration, allowing cost savings and control throughout our production system.

Arable Production and Feed Milling
We mill all of our standard and free range hen feed (UFAS Accredited), with the addition of raw materials grown and processed by our own arable production.

Pullet Rearing
Day old chicks are carefully reared at our specialised sites before going into lay.

Production Flocks
The vast majority of our eggs are produced by our own flocks. To satisfy the market’s demand, we produce eggs to all UK welfare standards. We have always been at the forefront of category development, from the early development of modern free range production through to recent progress in barn eggs.

Packing
All of our fresh eggs are packed through two state-of-the-art egg graders with the world’s highest capacity egg grading facilities.

Logistics
We deliver products to our customers nationally with our own HGV fleet. The fleet consists of ambient, chilled and multi-temp vehicles to support our chilled products division.

Marketing
We supply a comprehensive marketing and category management service to our customers. With specialised expertise in category analysis, promotional support and brand development, we work with our customers to develop and grow their egg categories.

How we do free range

Although free range egg farming began as niche sector, it is now the most prevalent egg farming method in the UK. Over the years husbandry techniques and farming technology have developed considerably, and now new free range farms deliver the best welfare. Modern hen house designs are based on behavioural science, providing a low stress environment and prompting the hens to range more.
